This
week in Ziggies, we read ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Browne.
This is a story about a girl called Handa who takes a selection of
fruit to her friend as a surprise. As she makes her way to her
friend’s village, carrying the basket of fruit on her head, a
variety of animals take the fruit and by the time she reaches her
destination, it is Handa who gets the surprise because the fruit is
not what she expected!
The
children all enjoyed the story, with its colourful fruit and animals.
Lots of the children were familiar with the story from school. After
the story we made fruit kebabs, using our favourite fruit from the
selection of apples, pears, grapes, bananas, strawberries,
raspberries and blueberries. They were yummy, and all the children
took great care with the kebab sticks!
After
our fruity snacks, we modelled fruit out of play dough and made
Handa’s Surprise bookmarks. We also made lots of different animal
masks to take home, and did the usual selection of word searches and
puzzles to test how well we’d remembered the story.
Ziggies
will be back next week (Tuesday 20 May), when we’ll be reading
‘Zog’ by Julia Donaldson. So if you’re in year 1 and would
like to join us, please come along with your grown up and any
brothers or sisters you may have. Bring a copy of the book (if you
have one). We’ll be in the middle block hall from 3.15 – 4.15pm.
Hope to
see you there.
