Handa's Surprise

This week in Ziggies, we read ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Browne. This is a story about a girl called Handa who takes a selection of fruit to her friend as a surprise. As she makes her way to her friend’s village, carrying the basket of fruit on her head, a variety of animals take the fruit and by the time she reaches her destination, it is Handa who gets the surprise because the fruit is not what she expected!

The children all enjoyed the story, with its colourful fruit and animals. Lots of the children were familiar with the story from school. After the story we made fruit kebabs, using our favourite fruit from the selection of apples, pears, grapes, bananas, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. They were yummy, and all the children took great care with the kebab sticks!

After our fruity snacks, we modelled fruit out of play dough and made Handa’s Surprise bookmarks. We also made lots of different animal masks to take home, and did the usual selection of word searches and puzzles to test how well we’d remembered the story.

Ziggies will be back next week (Tuesday 20 May), when we’ll be reading ‘Zog’ by Julia Donaldson. So if you’re in year 1 and would like to join us, please come along with your grown up and any brothers or sisters you may have. Bring a copy of the book (if you have one). We’ll be in the middle block hall from 3.15 – 4.15pm.

Hope to see you there.

A Special Visitor

Ziggies after school club returned on Tuesday 6 May after a four week break. We were delighted to see so many familiar faces there, and also a new friend came to see us. Freckle Frog, (Ziggie’s best friend) called in to see everyone and was given a very warm welcome. He hopped about and had a cuddle with all the children.

Our book this week was ‘Dig Dig Digging’ by Margaret Mayo, which is all about diggers, tractors, lorries and other working vehicles. After the story, we dug in the sand tray for buried letters to see how many words we could make out of them. We made 3D models of houses and trucks out of card, and painted pictures of roads and building sites with cut out vehicles stuck on. We also made our own moveable diggers and coloured lots of pictures of our favourite trucks. At the end of the session, there were some toy trucks to play with and we enjoyed pushing them around and vroom, vroom, vrooming!
