Snails & Whales

On Tuesday 18 February, we read ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson. Some children were familiar with the story, but it was new to lots of the children and their grown ups. It’s a lovely inspirational tale of how a tiny snail saved the life of a huge whale. After reading the story, the children were set a challenge of finding the Gruffalo in the book. Lots of children found him and so did some grown ups (with a bit of help!!).

We made paper plate snails and decorated their shells with lots of bits of coloured paper, and we made snail and whale mobiles with straws, card and wool to dangle at home. There was also lots of play dough to make models with, and activity sheets to test our memories of the story.

We’ll be back in Ziggies After School Club on Tuesday 4 March, when we’ll be asking ‘A Gruffalo? What’s a Gruffalo?’ So if you’re in year 1 and fancy some fun in the deep, dark wood, please come along with your grown up and a copy of the book (if you have one), and join us in the middle block hall from 3.15 – 4.15pm.

Hope to see you there.

We've been on a bear hunt!

On Tuesday 11 February, Ziggies After School Club went on a bear hunt. There were 15 children from Year 1 with their brothers, sisters, Mums, Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas, all listening to ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and participating in various craft activities relating to the story.

We iced cakes and painted paper plates to look like the bear in the story. We also made pictures of the bear with scenes from the book, using paint, glitter, cotton wool and pieces of coloured card and tissue paper.

Next week we’ll be reading ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson, so please come along again, bring a copy of the book (if you have one) and enjoy the fun with your grown up.

If you haven’t signed up to Ziggies yet (and you’re in year 1) just let your teacher know that you’d like to come, and bring an adult with you to enjoy the fun. We’ll be in the middle block hall from 3.15 – 4.15pm on Tuesday 18 February. See you there.

Welcome to Ziggies!

On Tuesday 4 February, Ziggies After School Club launched with a wonderful turn out. There were 18 children from Year 1 with their brothers, sisters, Mums, Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas, all listening to ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and participating in various craft activities relating to the story. We even had a visit from Ziggie himself to welcome everyone to the club.

Next week we’ll be reading ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen, so please come along again, bring a copy of the book (if you have one) and your favourite bear, and enjoy the fun with your grown up.

If you haven’t signed up to Ziggies yet, just let your teacher know, if you’re in Year 1, and bring an adult with you to enjoy the fun. We’ll be in the middle block hall from 3.15 – 4.15pm. See you there.
