Hamilton’s Hats

Hamilton’s Hats

On Tuesday 18 March, we listened to the story of Hamilton, a pig with many hats. Hamilton’s mum thinks his interest in hats will lead him nowhere, but (unusual for a mum) she is wrong! Hamilton learns 4 important lessons from his hats. He learns to be determined, brave, patient and kind.

The children and their grown ups enjoyed the story written by Martine Oborne and the lovely illustrations by Axel Scheffler. It was new to most of the children, but will surely become a favourite. We counted Hamilton’s hats and there were so many we had to count in tens! We worked out that we needed 12 people’s fingers and toes to count them all.

Afterwards, we designed and made hats of our own, from paper plates, paper bowls and card, which we coloured and decorated with stickers, feathers and jewels. Then we learned how to make pompoms to make our own Hamilton pig complete with a hat from his collection.

We also decorated ‘piggy biscuits’ with pink icing, marshmallow snouts, white chocolate button ears and mini smartie eyes. They were yummy, and almost too cute to eat.

There is no Ziggies After School Club next week (Tuesday 25th March) due to Parents’ Evening, but we’ll be back on Tuesday 1st April, when we’ll be reading ‘Pants’ by Giles Andreae. So if you’re in year 1 and would like to join us, please come along with your grown up and any brothers or sisters you may have. Bring a copy of the book (if you have one). We’ll be in the middle block hall from 3.15 – 4.15pm.

Hope to see you there.

Where the Wild Things Are

On Tuesday 11 March, we followed Max, a mischievous boy, on his journey to become King of the Wild Things. ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ was written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak in 1963, and is widely regarded as a classic children’s story.

After reading the story, we made ‘wild’ feet, so we could become monsters from the book. We decorated and planted cress heads to take home, and made pictures of Max sailing in his boat to the land where the wild things are.

Then we tested our knowledge of the story with puzzles, word searches and activity sheets.

We’ll be back in Ziggies After School Club on Tuesday 18th March, when we’ll be reading ‘Hamilton’s Hats’ by Martine Oborne, a story about a pig who loves hats.  So if you’re in year 1 and would like to join us, please come along with your grown up and any brothers or sisters you may have. Bring a copy of the book (if you have one). We’ll be in the middle block hall from 3.15 – 4.15pm. Oh, and this week we’d like everyone to wear a funny hat (including the grown ups). If you don’t have a funny hat, any hat will do.

Hope to see you there.

A mouse took a stroll….

On Tuesday 4 March, we went into the deep, dark wood and met a fox, an owl and a snake. They all wanted to eat the little brown mouse, but he was much too clever for them!

Julia Donaldson’s Gruffalo is one of the best known children’s books, and a delight to read again and again. All the children enjoyed the story, and the many activities related to it.

We made Gruffalo masks, little mice from cardboard tubes, and finger puppets of all the characters in the book. We also made a Gruffalo with moving arms and legs, and tested our knowledge of the story with picture crossword puzzles, word searches and activity sheets.

We’ll be back in Ziggies After School Club on Tuesday 11th March, when we’ll be finding out ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ (by Maurice Sendak). So if you’re in year 1 and would like to join us, please come along with your grown up and any brothers or sisters you may have. Bring a copy of the book (if you have one). We’ll be in the middle block hall from 3.15 – 4.15pm.

Hope to see you there.
