What did the ladybird hear?

This week in Ziggies, we read ‘What the Ladybird Heard’, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Lydia Monks. This is a lovely story about a tiny ladybird who foils a plot by Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh to steal the fine, prize cow from the farm. All the animals work together, led by the ladybird, to confuse the baddies and save the cow.

We made our own clever little ladybirds from babybel cheeses, poppy seeds and cocktail sticks. We also made ladybirds from card with movable wings, and woolly sheep. There were lots of different activity sheets to do, a map of the farm, complete with movable animals, and play dough to mould.

Ziggies won’t be on next week (Tuesday 1 July) due to the Year 1 trip to Noah’s Ark in Bristol, but we will be back on Tuesday 8 July, same time, same place. This will be our last session before the summer holidays, and we would love to see all our regulars for a little party to thank you all for your support in making Ziggies the success it’s been. (There may also be a special visitor!) If you have a favourite book which we’ve covered in Ziggies during our time together, please bring it along to read again.

In September we will be extending our invitation to the children in the new year 1 classes, but rest assured that our current Ziggies children and adults will still be welcome to join us as usual.

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Rescue

This week in Ziggies, we read The Lighthouse Keeper’s Rescue by Ronda & David Armitage. This is a story about Mr Grinling, the lighthouse keeper, who is getting a bit old and tired. The lighthouse inspectors want to give his job to a younger man, but Mr Grinling shows them that he’s still able to make a difference.

We made lighthouses, boats and undersea pictures. We also designed our own fish and did word searches and question sheets to test how well we remembered the story.

Ziggies will be back next week  (Tuesday 17 June) when we’ll be reading the well known story of ‘The Gingerbread Man’. So if you’re in year 1 and would like to join us, please run, run as fast as you can to the middle block hall. We’ll be there from 3.15 – 4.15pm. Bring your grown up and any brothers or sisters you may have and a copy of the book (if you have one).

Hope to see you there.

Run, run, as fast as you can…..

This week in Ziggies, we read The Gingerbread Man, which was well known by even the youngest children present. The story about the Gingerbread Man who managed to avoid being eaten by the horse and cow, by running as fast as he could, is a classic children’s story.

As a snack with our squash we ate gingerbread men, and designed and decorated our own version out of card. We also made a standing horse and an origami fox. We made a little old woman and a little old man out of spoons and designed their clothes, and made handprint paint pictures of the story. After word searches, quiz questions and jumbled word puzzles, we did some colouring before going home laden down with all our lovely craft.

Ziggies will be back next week  (Tuesday 24 June) when we’ll be reading ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson, and illustrated by Lydia Monks. So if you’re in year 1 and would like to join us, please come to the middle block hall. We’ll be there from 3.15 – 4.15pm. Bring your grown up and any brothers or sisters you may have and a copy of the book (if you have one).

Hope to see you there.
